Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find commonly asked questions from academics and schools of the University.
UCIL units are set up as free choice for self-enrolment.
If programme set up doesn’t allow students to self-enrol onto a UCIL unit it will be their home school’s enrolment (C&P) team who should process the enrolment.
- To ensure that the student is authorised to take the unit.
- As there are extra steps in the process for schools to complete in this case for enrolments to fully pull through.
UCIL units open for enrolment when university wide course unit selection opens. Students can enrol on to a UCIL unit by the end of the second week of teaching in the semester that the unit runs. Semester 2 units remain open for enrolment throughout semester 1 and until the end of the second week of teaching in semester 2.
Please note that late enrolments are not accepted.
Attendance at UCIL lectures and seminars is compulsory. If a school permits a student to take a UCIL unit which clashes with another class it will be assumed that attendance at the other (non-UCIL) class is being waived.
UCIL units are designed to be open to all undergraduate students. The number at the start of the unit code denotes the level of the course (for example a unit code UCIL2XXXX is a level 2 unit). Programmes may have restrictions on what level units students can take but from a UCIL perspective any undergraduate students are welcome to take any UCIL unit.
Details on UCIL coursework weightings can be found on the unit pages on the UCIL website.
UCIL aim to contact school assessment and mitigating circumstances teams towards the start of each semester with a list of UCIL coursework deadlines and details on what can and can’t be extended.
Please contact ucil@manchester.ac.uk with any questions.
UCIL aim to have moderated marks posted in advance of all school exam boards.
At the earliest opportunity we will contact schools’ assessments team to inform them of the date when UCIL marks will be posted.
In the unlikely event that any marks are delayed we will contact the affected schools to advise.
Schools should inform UCIL when awarding extensions of up to 3 weeks.
Schools must request approval from UCIL before awarding extensions of more than 3 weeks (it is often not possible to permit extensions beyond 3 weeks).
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the UCIL team at ucil@manchester.ac.uk.
