MLP Volunteering Criteria
To find out more about what volunteering you can count towards the MLP, click on the points below:
For the purposes of the MLP, a 'suitable' volunteering opportunity is an unpaid activity with a charity or not-for-profit organisation that directly benefits the wider community.
Activities that do not count towards your MLP volunteering are:
- Any paid activity (excluding out of pocket expenses)
- An activity that already forms part of a credit-rated module (including a community project undertaken as part of a Career Project Management Skills module)
- Any activity that benefits the student community, such as being a PASS Leader or Student Representative. These roles are now recognised in the Stepping Up category of the Stellify Award and therefore cannot be counted towards the volunteering part of the Stellify.
- Unpaid work experience with a company, business or private organisation.
Please note that only hours can be rewarded from actual volunteering completed; not from any additional activities such as travelling to your volunteering venue or training.
If you have any queries about whether the activity that you wish to undertake will count towards your MLP volunteering, please contact the Volunteering and Awards Team.
To achieve the Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP), you will have almost two years to complete your MLP volunteering.
For example, if you are planning to take the MLP in the 2024-5 academic year, you will need to have completed your MLP volunteering between Monday 18 September 2023 and Saturday 31 May 2025, as well as pass the Leadership in Action unit.
Please note that evidence is required to confirm the volunteering has taken place. To find out more about this, please see our section on How to Submit Your Volunteering & Get it Awarded Towards Your MLP.
